Assessments and Audits

We have established a reputation for credibility and integrity through our work in regulatory compliance assessments and audits. Our staff has capabilities and experience in environmental compliance, technical basis and procedures development, industrial hygiene, radiation protection & health physics. Our experience includes:
  • Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) Radiological Protection Program (RPP) Triennial Assessments and comprehensive readiness reviews on three contracts (2013-2016, 2016-2019, and 2020-2022). These assessments covered all the elements in the DOE’s Triennial Review Cycle, including: (1) organization and administration; (2) ALARA program; (3) external dosimetry program; (4) internal dosimetry program; (5) area radiation monitoring, airborne radioactivity, monitoring and respiratory protection, contamination monitoring and control, and instrument calibration and maintenance; (6) radiological work planning, entry and exit controls, radiological work controls, posting and labeling, release of equipment and materials, and sealed radioactive source accountability and control; (7)  emergency exposure situations; (8) nuclear accident dosimetry; (9) records; (10) reports to individuals; (11) radiation safety training; and (12) limits for embryo/fetus. CAI conducted comprehensive readiness reviews of the ANL RPP in preparation for DOE audits in 2013 and 2017.
  • In 2014, we provided industrial hygiene program, beryllium subject matter expertise to the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) Worker Safety and Health Division. We participated in an assessment of PNNL’s compliance with 10 CFR 850, Chronic Beryllium Disease Prevention Program (CBDPP) requirements. The assessment examined the incorporation of external requirements into PNNL’s CBDPP, flow down of the requirements into organizational procedures, and implementation of the requirements in the field.
  • We participated in an on-site external dosimetry assessment at Sandia National Laboratory in 2013.
  • Also in 2013, we performed a comprehensive audit for the Lovelace Respiratory Research Institute (LRRI) to evaluate compliance with (1) NRC regulations, (2) internal standard operating procedures and policies, and (3) an evaluation of LRRI practices, policies and SOPs versus best practices.

  • Our staff provided health physicist administrative/program support to the Radiological Controls (RadCon) Program at Washington River Protection Solutions from 2010-2012. We performed internal audits of the RadCon Program as required by 10 CFR 835.102 through examination of program content and implementation.
  • We assessed the radiological dosimetry services (internal dosimetry, in vivo and in vitro bioassay measurements, external dosimetry, and occupational radiation exposure records) performed by Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in 2010. We evaluated PNNL certification (DOELAP) and processes and judged the effectiveness and the degree of compliance with the requirements in the statement of work.[BU1]
  • Between 2009-2013, we performed numerous audits at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. These included Triennial Assessments of the radiation protection program, independent assessments of the nuclear criticality safety program, decontamination & decommissioning programs, focused facility-specific audits, training and qualification program for radiological control technicians, radioactive and hazardous waste management facilities, tritium facility, and on-site transportation of radioactive material.
